WORK YOUR BRAIN

The brain is one of the largest and most complex organs in the human body. It is made up of more than 100 billion nerves that communicate in trillions of connections called synapses.

A friend of mine told me recently that she couldn't survive  without going to the gym every  day. She claimed  that it got rod of stress, boosted  her energy levels and gave her peace of mind. " That is great," I replied. "But do you ever exercise your brain?" She gave  me a look that could only mean "Huh/" And she is not the only one who had a "what?" moment when I mentioned  the subject.

I got the skinny  on brain exercise when I talked to an expert in brain science recently for a project. He told me  that millions of people followed physical exercise routiness in order to keep fit, but that there was also a lot you could do to  keep  your brain in topnotch shape. The odd thing is that most people don' t have a clue that there is any way to keep your brain in great shape. But there definitely is. The exercises are usually called "Neurobics," and they are based on research done at neurobiology labs around
 the world.

Brain cells learn by literally creating new links with each other. For many years, experts claimed that you could only succeed in making new connections during youth. But this is far from true, as recent scientific evidence  has shown. The human brain has an amazing capacity for regeneration  and, at every stage of life, it has the ability to reorganize and rewire itself. This is really obvious when people have serious brain injuries. Even if part of their brain is destroyed, it is very evident  that they can still relearn oid skills and learn new ones as well.

There  are many ways to  exercise your brain, of course: doing puzzles, playing chess ...  even doing your homework! But because a large area of the brain is used for processing sensory inputs, Neurobics uses all the senses - hearing, sight, smell, touch and even taste - to build new networks in the brain. I told the expert that sounded  like a lot of hard work, and at my age (17), didn' t think it was necessary, anyway. He quickly contradicted me. "Not  true," he said. "The exercise are easy and fun. And brain exercise is essential to good health."
